How Can I Train My Cat to Like Being Brushed?

There are several ways to train a cat to like being brushed. Start young, have several different kinds of brushes, and be very gentle. As soon as your cat starts tail flicking or walks away, stop, and try again later.

Long haired cats are the hardest to keep from matting.

I like to hold out the brush to my cat at the beginning, so that they can rub against it. Like with many things cat, it’s important to go slowly.

Make sure you have several different types of brushes, including a bristled brush.

It’s vital to teach young cats to tolerate brushing because as they age, they may develop obesity or arthritis. Arthritic or obese cats cannot groom well and often develop matted hair. Matted or tangled hair damages the skin and may need further treatment by a veterinarian.

Refer to this page to about cat body language, to see if your cat is becoming annoyed.

Unfortunately, some cats never learn to tolerate brushing. Your veterinarian can help with matt removal or sedated hair trimmings if necessary.
