Purring
Most people know that cats purr when they are happy, but did you know they also purr when stressed, anxious, or even hurt? Look at what else is going on to determine what the purr means.
If your cat’s tail is up and they are rubbing against you, they are probably happy. If your cat is at the vets and starts purring, this is likely due to anxiety.
Chattering
These noises are sharp, high pitched sounds that cats make when they are excited about a bird or mouse.
Trills and Chirps
Mother cats use trills and chirps to communicate with her babies. Adult cats may remember this from when they were young. If they do, they will likely trill to you when they are happy, and will trill to other cats in the household.
Yowling
Cats will yowl when they get older, if they are in heat, and of course if they are distressed.
Meowing
Domestic cats use meows to communicate with their rather dense human housemates. You will know if your cats meow indicates a greeting, annoyance, or that they need something. Cats don’t often meow to each other but baby cats will meow at mom as a distress call.
Growling, hissing, and spitting
Watch out! This is either a scared or angry cat. You definitely want to give this cat some space.
