These are both examples of redirected aggression. Redirected Aggression is where your cat is upset with something, but redirects this stress against someone else.

There are a lot of creative ways to help your cat. For example, if your cat gets stressed at the veterinarian and goes home and attacks your other cat, bring both cats at the same time for their yearly check up.

Vet Note: Please bring a separate carrier for each cat! We can also have redirected aggression if two cats share one carrier at the vet’s office.

For cats that are stressed by outside cats or predators, there are several options. Firstly, make sure you aren’t cleaning litterboxes outside where feral cats or predators may smell your cats and come to your house to investigate. Secondly, you can scare predators and feral cats by considering technology solutions such as motion activated sprinkler systems. Finally, don’t feed wildlife. This will attract animals to your yard which can stress your feline.

Vet Help: Your veterinarian can help you with anti-stress medications and pheromones to calm your kitty during stressful events.
